Motivation
Motivation is the set of forces that initiates, directs and makes people persist in their efforts to accomplish a goal. In terms of this definition, initiation of effort is concerned with the choices that people make about how much effort to put into their jobs. (Williams & McWilliams, 2010, p.213)

Equity theory
Equity theory says that people will be motivated at work when they perceive that they are being treated fairly. Inputs are the contributions employees make to the organization.
Inputs include education and training, intelligence, experience, effort, number of hours worked and ability.
Outcomes are what employees receive in exchange for their contributions to the organization. Outcomes include pay, fringe benefits, status symbols and job titles and assignment. (Williams & McWilliams, 2010, p.217)
Woolworths is a dynamic, fast-paced, ever-changing, people-intensive environment to work in. Whether staff work on the shop floor or in a support role, people are a critical component of the business success.

Expectancy theory
Expectancy theory says that people will be motivated to the extent to which they believe that their efforts will lead to good performance, that good performance will be rewarded and that they will be offered attractive rewards. (Williams & McWilliams, 2010, p.221)

Reward
Woolworths continues to provide market competitive benefits and remuneration. The remuneration structure includes fixed and variable, performance based components, depending on the employee’s position.
The objective of our reward framework is to:
▪ Retain, attract and motivate key talent;
▪ Align to shareholder value creation; and
▪ Link to company, financial and HR strategy.
A range of incentive programs are designed to support attraction, retention and a culture of performance. All Store Managers participate in an annual cash-based, short-term incentive plan and an equity-based deferred short-term incentive with annual allocations.
Part-time employees have access to the same general benefits as their full-time counterparts on a pro-rata basis. Other benefits include a staff discount card, access to the Woolworths Employee Credit Union, discounted private health insurance and the 25 Year Club.
Share purchase plan
Under the Woolworths Share Purchase Plan, an annual invitation enables participating employees to acquire Woolworths’ shares using pre-tax rather than after-tax income. Through voluntary participation in this program, 16,107 employees were issued shares in 2012.
